Description

City Garden Montessori School (City Garden) is the only Montessori charter school in Missouri, and we are one of the highest-performing charter schools in the state. Our team possesses passion and determination to implement the Montessori approach to educating children in a diverse, public school environment. City Garden is committed to being an anti-biased, anti-racist community and seeks others who are passionate about these values. We are committed to continuous learning and growth for adults in the community, to foster excellence for all City Garden children.

Located in St. Louis, City Garden is looking forward to beginning its 14th school year in 2021-22. We began in 2008 with 53 students; and, we are expecting to serve over 400 children in preschool through eighth grade next year. As we grow, we continue to seek individuals to join us who share our vision for academic excellence for all children and holistic Montessori education, rooted in equity and social justice.

City Garden has attracted support from the Opportunity Trust, and the Chan-Zuckerberg Initiative has published a case study about City Garden’s innovative model.

Lead Guides – Kindergarten

City Garden is expanding its Early Childhood education staff for the 2021-22 school year. We are seeking to fill three positions for Montessori Kindergarten Lead Guides for aged 5 students. We are in search of educators with a passion for academically rigorous, individualized, experiential education in a diverse public school setting to fulfill the position of Kindergarten Lead Guide. The Lead Guide will work with an Assistant Guide in the classroom.

While we are beginning this expansion with the separation of these age groups, our eventual plan is to combine those students aged 3, 4, and 5 into classrooms aligned with the traditional Montessori planes of development. This means that all Lead Guides will need to obtain state education certification in addition to their Montessori certification in Early Childhood education.

The ideal candidate for Kindergarten Lead Guide will have a Bachelor’s degree and both Montessori and state certification in Early Childhood education.

A qualified candidate for Kindergarten Lead Guide is someone who has a Bachelor’s degree, is a Montessori certified Early Childhood educator and who is interested in growing with us by acquiring state certification in Early Childhood education, which we will assist you in obtaining.

The candidate must be committed to growing in a school environment that is committed to anti-bias/anti-racist values and practices with a vision to create a more equitable world through education. We are seeking candidates who are outstanding, innovative teachers and have at least three years of professional teaching experience and who is interested in making City Garden their vocational "home" for many years.

This position offers robust benefits including medical, dental, retirement, and generous personal time off.

What It’s Like to Work at City Garden

Our work is a calling. We are implementing a very unique, specialized approach to education. City Garden is also much more than a school–we have a deep commitment to doing “whatever it takes” for our children and families, and we educate our children in the context of an active, vibrant, diverse community. All of this requires a special kind of commitment. Staff must also have a high level of cultural competence, and be committed to constant growth in this area.

Our work requires being coachable, an ongoing desire to learn and a sense of egoless-ness. Our work is not easy. Our guides (teachers) individualize curriculum for every student, and have mixed age groupings. We are constantly aligning Montessori with the Missouri Learning Standards, and we strive to implement the Montessori approach with fidelity while meeting the requirements of teaching in a public school. Administrative and support staff must be able to think “outside the box” and have a relentless commitment to creating new ways of doing things, that lead to equity.

Our work requires flexibility, independence and initiative. We are a young organization; things change fast, and we are still developing programs, systems and structures. We are looking for people who are excited to create, innovate, and constantly learn new things!

Our work is profoundly rewarding!!!  Our children love to come to school. They are joyful, funny and engaged, and they love all of the adults at City Garden. We have an incredible community of support beyond our walls, which includes parents, neighborhood residents, other organizations, businesses, foundations, corporations and lots of individuals who believe in us and our mission.
